PORTFOLIO: RENOVATIONS: Lakefront Residence

Originally designed by master architect Roland Terry in 1959, the Lakefront Residence evolved into a substantial renovation in close collaboration with the owners and Holly McKinley Interior Design. The owners requested a renovation that would respect the historic origins of their waterfront home, while updating the finishes and reconfiguring the program for contemporary family living and display of their art and antiques. The project was inspired by Terry’s modernist design ideas and seamless connections between inside and outside spaces.

The redesigned entry sequence now features a pavilion and garden courtyard leading to a covered walkway that was rebuilt with Tenino stone and antique granite pavers. Finely detailed wood screens indicate the path of movement to the front door: a massive slab of hand-adzed cedar with bronze hardware. Inside, the living, dining and family rooms were accented with new finishes; the kitchen now opens to the adjoining family room and views of Lake Washington. The master suite and library were reconfigured by the addition of bay windows and detailed in a contemporary manner complimentary to Terry’s original design. Both rooms now extend onto a large deck and embrace the lake views. Throughout the project, the home was updated with respect to Terry’s legacy, gently weaving the old with the new, and refreshed with finely crafted materials such as Venetian plaster, Chinese granite, salvaged Elm wood planks and hand-forged iron. The material palette celebrates fine craftsmanship and provides a sophisticated backdrop for the art collection. The renovation refined the layout to better support the family’s lifestyle and extends the living spaces into new terraced gardens, highlighting the connection between home, land and water.
